WellSpan Health bond rating affirmed by agencies as stable

YORK, Pa. (Sept. 30, 2025) – WellSpan Health today announced that both Moody’s Investor Services (Moody’s) and Fitch Ratings (Fitch) have affirmed the health system’s stable bond ratings, maintaining a leading position in Central Pennsylvania and allowing the health system to continue providing the highest quality care at the lowest cost to patients.

Moody’s and Fitch, credit rating businesses that provide financial research on bonds and other debt securities to help illustrate an organization’s financial wellbeing, have issued a stable outlook for WellSpan Health’s bond rating with Moody’s affirming the “Aa3” and “Aa3/VMIG 1 revenue bonds” rating for the fourth year in a row while Fitch affirms their AA- rating. Currently only one other health system in Pennsylvania has an AA rating.

"These bond ratings validate our ongoing efforts to maintain a strong financial foundation for our health system, solidifying WellSpan's prominent role in Central Pennsylvania," stated Laura Buczkowski, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of WellSpan Health. "In the face of current economic uncertainty, the affirmation from Moody's and Fitch underscores WellSpan's exceptional standing among our peers, enabling us to enhance care delivery while ensuring the highest quality, most cost-effective experience for our patients."

The Moody’s report notes WellSpan’s scale and geographic reach, which underpin the system’s leading market position across several contiguous counties in Central Pennsylvania. Fitch has a similar view of WellSpan’s leading market position, and its rating is based on WellSpan’s forward-looking financial and operating risk profiles. Since 2019, WellSpan has expanded its service area from five to twelve counties.

“These results are a true testament to our strong strategic planning, operational execution and investments that are transforming the health care industry as we know it,” said Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., president and chief executive officer, WellSpan Health. “All 23,000 WellSpan team members play an important part in simplifying and personalizing the health care experience for everyone.”

WellSpan’s ongoing strategic partnerships with AiDoc, Emerus, General Catalyst, Helix, Hippocratic AI, RoboEatz and Zipline, among others, highlight the organization’s commitment to innovative approaches and vision to reimagine health care.

To meet the rapidly growing demand for health care services across Central Pennsylvania, WellSpan has invested in critical infrastructure projects such as expanding access to care in Lancaster County with a new ambulatory surgical center, building three new hospitals that will open in early 2026, as well as erecting a new surgical and critical care tower at WellSpan York Hospital that will revolutionize advanced specialty care for complex conditions when opened in 2027.

WellSpan remains dedicated to serving its communities by breaking down barriers to health care access, including enhancing language and cultural support, broadening telehealth services, offering financial assistance to eligible individuals and partnering with local organizations to deliver care directly to those in need. In fiscal year 2024, the organization's presence in Central Pennsylvania generated an economic impact exceeding $5 billion, with over $400 million dedicated to community benefits as detailed in its annual Community Benefit Report.
